 The Five Gift Behaviours

Giving gifts is easy. Giving appropriate gifts is difficult. Those who do it well seem to have (dare we say it?) THE GIFT ... the gift of giving!

Most of us fear giving gifts, though we love doing it. How do we really know what others like? We don’t. Not giving a gift is unthinkable so we buy gifts that we like, desperately hoping they’ll like the same.

Whether it’s for Baby Showers, Engagements, Bucks/Hens Parties, Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Christmas or any other occasion, we’d all like to become better at gift-giving ... and that’s what we’re about at WippyGift website – making it easier for you to give better gifts ... and helping you plan/organise your parties/events with ease. We’ll talk about helping you organise your events later and now, let’s talk about the perfect gift for that perfect person ... friend, family, colleague who, from now on, we’ll call your giftee.

Wouldn’t it be great not to have that fear and uncertainty and to know exactly what gifts they like? Well, you can and that’s what this WippyGift website is here for – making the whole act of giving gifts fun, comfortable, certain and fearless.

And, while we’re at it, we’ll help get you into your giftees’ minds and develop your gift of giving. We’ll give you ways to ...

 Finding Your Giftees’ Gift Behaviours

In the previous blogt, The Five Gift Behaviours, we said we’d help you get inside the minds of your giftees to be able to see what gifts they prefer. So, start with observing them and seeing how they give love, affection and thanks. They’ll typically give in one of five different ways:

Giving Words

These friends are always verbally positive, giving helpful, supportive words of advice and encouragement to everyone. Some are Post-it experts, sticking notes around the place, giving affirmative words of support. Some send emails of congratulations. However they say it, their way of giving gifts is their expression/words, said or written. These are the Word Givers.

Giving Time

If your giftee takes time out to help people, to be with people, to listen to people, to do things with people, they’re probably a Timer Giver. Or the boss who tells you to take time off when you need it. They may (or may not) be stingy with gifts, money or property but they will not be stingy with their time – sometimes to their own detriment, giving others time and having little for themselves.

What To Give Each Of The Gift Behaviours

So, you’ve read the previous blog from WippyGift, Finding Your Giftees’ Gift Behaviours, and you’ve discovered what each of your friends are. Now, what gift do you give each one?

Giving Words

These giftees love words and the obvious choice is books - positive, inspirational and uplifting ones. These can be books of inspirational biographies or autobiographies, uplifting quotes or affirmations. They may also like affirmation cards, motivational CDs, music CDs or inspirational/moving movies – DVDs. And always, always, always include a card or note with something personal from you written on it.

Giving Time

These giftees value time and, though it may not appear so, they do appreciate you giving your time to them. Gifts with time and effort put in are especially appreciated – bowls or baskets of assorted small gifts; flower arrangements with special little goodies included (e.g. chocolates, cards, cookies); nappy cakes for baby showers. They love trips away (though they may mutter about not affording the time!), dinners and even pampering gifts like massages, hairdos, facials and makeovers ... and don’t forget than men like these pampering gifts too!

Giving Gifts

Giftees who love giving gifts, love receiving them. They appreciate most gifts. However, you can try to surprise them with quirky or different gifts –  lots of little things in a package (you’ve gone to a lot of trouble over this gift), practical joke gifts, beautiful frames with photos of someone special (you or them, probably) in them. Or, get really crafty and buy them what they last gave – they bought it for someone else so they’ll love it for themselves!

Giving Service

These giftees are usually practical and appreciate tools ...

Wedding Gifts

It used to be easy buying wedding gifts - give the young couple gifts for the house they’re about to set up. Nowadays, however, many couples are not young, many have set up their house and are living together and so thinking of gift ideas for weddings is more uncertain. That’s one reason we’ve set up this WippyGifts website. We want to make it easier for you to find gift ideas for every occasion - Baby Showers, Engagements, Bucks/Hens Parties, Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Christmas or any other occasion.

There are three basic wedding gift situations:

Young couple, not set up

This is the traditional wedding gift situation and they’ll probably want more practical gifts for their home – kitchen utensils, bedding, lounge accessories (e.g. cushions, throw-overs, lamps), handy-man tools for house or car and, if you’re really daring, ornaments. Cash isn’t romantic but always welcome!

Anniversary Gifts

In today’s divorce-strewn marital floor, it’s especially poignant when couples celebrate their anniversary ... any anniversary! And so, what anniversary gifts make this a special occasion ... what original gifts, unique gifts or personalised gifts show that you’ve really thought of this special occasion and the two people who’ve made it this far, however far they’ve made it. The traditional gifts for anniversaries are, with some anniversary gift ideas:

1 year – paper, pansies

Original edition of his daily newspaper on either the birth or wedding date. Write a love letter. New book or an old edition of a favourite book. An old postcard from a place that's special for the two of you and get it framed. Adult board game. Plane tickets. Tickets to a favourite sporting, cultural or music event.

5 years – wood, daisies

Bonsai plant. Weekend away in a log cabin. Wooden plaque engraved with words of love. A walk in the woods. Photo of you or of the two of you in a wooden frame. New fence or decking ...

Buying Gifts for Men

Buying gifts – interesting gifts, unique gifts – for men can be a challenge for some people. But gifts for men need not be so difficult if we open up to imagination and courage – to imaginative gifts.

Obviously there are the usual gifts of deodorant, socks, ties, novels, sports books but when was the last time anyone bought a man a really nice belt? ... or flowers? Men love them both! Gifts for men don’t have to be things, either – how about some experiences:

For the do-it-yourselfer: along with the usual man-gifts of hand-saws, hammers, chisels, screwdrivers, socket sets and carpenter’s aprons, how about treating him to a night-class on car maintenance, home renovation or carpentry?

For the music buff: You can get him the usual musical gifts of CDs and CD racks but what about tickets to their favourite artist or a series of guitar, piano or singing lessons?

The petrol head: As well as the gifts of tools, car/bike accessories, driving/riding clothing, how about shouting him a day at the track to drive a racing or stock car? Or a glider ride or a flying lesson?

The bachelor: Yes, you can buy your man the gifts of shaving cream, mousse or alcohol but what about a facial treatment or ...

Buying Gifts for Women

Buying gifts for women may seem the easiest thing in the world as they all seem to like bling, jewellery, make-up, flowers and the occasional dinner out. Because it seems easy, people (men?) limit their gift ideas to more of the same! Yes, women may appreciate these girly gifts but why not unique gifts or interesting gift ideas that show you’ve really thought about what gifts your lady likes – more personalised gifts that reflect who your lady really is. Or, as well as the girly things, how about gifting an event, an experience or an adventure?

The sporting girl’s gifts

A year’s gym membership; a series of coaching lessons with their favourite sportsperson; tickets to watch their favourite team, preferably overseas.

The musical girl’s gifts

Tickets to their favourite show (overseas, perhaps!); singing, piano or violin lessons; dinner and dance/show evening; tickets to a show and to meet the artist(s) after the show.

The adventuring girl’s gifts
